Our Adoption Process
Our adoption process is not your typical adoption process.
Not only do we set our dogs up for success with their new families, but offer an amazing transition process and lifetime support.
Our fosters are taken in as “long term fosters” typically due to behavioral issues or being a dog that is difficult to find an ideal home for. This means that these dogs are our family, before they are yours and they will always be family to us.
So, welcome to the family!
Once you send in your application the process starts:
We take typically 24-48 hours to look over an application thoroughly.
Once your application is approved we will email you:
A congratulatory letter, where we will ask any questions that we may have about your application or lifestyle.
A copy of our “Adoption Process” contract. This contract just states that we have approved you as a potential home for the specific dog in question and are holding future applications until the process is resolved. Resolution of the adoption process is either the adoption of the dog or adoption being denied (either by potential adopter or Some Minor Dog Training).
A copy of our Adoption Contract to review- this will not be a copy to sign and return.
A more in depth information file about the specific dog, the specific dogs needs, and requirements for adoption.
Schedule a home visit as well as a meet and greet.
Home visit/Meet & Greet:
The home visit will be structured, where we bring the dog in and work the dog in and around your home as if we are doing a “take home” from one of our Board and Train programs.
During this visit we will be checking the safety and cleanliness of the house.
We aren’t expecting you to live in a mansion or have floors so clean you can eat off of them; we just want to ensure that it is a safe and clean enviornment.
We are not against apartments and do not require a fully fenced yard. We do require a written plan on how the dog will get adequate exercise and be kept safe while outside.
We do require approval from a landlord or proof of home ownership for adoption.
We will go over the training the dog has, any behavioral issues the dog has had prior and how to prevent them from developing them again, go over how to maintain training in day-to-day life, etc.
We will have you handle the dog, go through the obedience briefly and evaluate how you and the dog respond to each other and interact. If there are multiple people within the household all/most of the household must participate.
After completing the structured interaction we will allow more unstructured session depending on how the dog and potential adopter feel and allow them to play and hang out.
You will receive a physical copy of the dog’s file to review once more and an “Intentions of Adoption” contract. This contract is due to be returned within 72 hours of the home visit.
This contract just states that whether you intend to go forward with the adoption process after meeting and interacting with the specific dog, or if you have decided that you and said dog are not a good fit.
If you decide to go forward with the adoption process, we will either approve or deny your desire to move forward within 48 hours of receiving your “Intentions of Adoption” contract.
The next step:
Perfect! You have decided to move forward with the adoption process and we have approved you as a great fit for this special dog! What’s next?
We schedule 4-6 training sessions where we bring the dog out to your home and/or mutually agreed upon locations (depending on the individual dog/family). During these sessions we direct you in how to handle this dog in various situations, help guide you as you learn the training language that the dog is familiar with and build your relationship and bond. These sessions are typically once or twice a week.
During these sessions we will discuss how to maintain this particular dog’s training and behaviors moving forward and when the dog goes home.
After your final session, you will officially sign the adoption contract and the dog will officially stay home with you.
We will supply almost everything that you need to start off on the right foot and continue training together. This typically includes: Slip lead and/or collar and leash, a pet cot, crate, certain training tools, a couple favorite toys and chews, a week’s worth of food, and at least the next month’s preventatives.
You will also get your dog’s file, including a recent health certificate and updated vaccination record.
That’s not the end!
Remember, we want to set you both up for success so we aren’t going to just vanish here!
At our final session, before leaving you to enjoy your first day with your new companion, we will schedule a follow up session for 2 weeks after.
During this follow up session we will help make sure that the transition is smooth and as seamless as possible, help you trouble shoot and correct any issues that may arise and keep you both moving in a positive direction.
If you feel its needed, we will schedule another follow up session for 1-2 weeks out, to continue to offer support as you both adjust to the new normal.
